CuCilento: a story hand-stitched, stitch by stitch
A Journey Called CuCilento
CuCilento: A Story Sewn with Care
In the heart of Cilento, Sarah’s dream comes to life: to build, through upcycling and craftsmanship, a new way of inhabiting the world. CuCilento is the thread that stitches past and future, memory and action.
Let me introduce myself: I am Sarah Emilie Khoudja and in July 2021, at the age of forty, I left Brussels with my family. I left behind a city life and a job as a project manager in the humanitarian sector to take a sabbatical year in the heart of Cilento, immersed in the National Park. The call of nature, of slowing down, of returning to the essential, was strong.
But I soon realized it wouldn’t just be “a year.” Life, with its quiet strength, had led us toward a deeper change. We had chosen — perhaps without fully realizing it — to stay. And now? How to reinvent oneself, how to make a living without giving up meaning and coherence? I’m not here to tell a fairy tale. Living here is beautiful, but not always easy. The differences are many. Yet, it was from those very differences that observations, intuitions, and ideas began to take shape.
I asked myself: how is it possible that top-quality food products are still sold wrapped in plastic? Or that special agricultural materials are abandoned — sometimes even burned? I longed to find a way to contribute concretely to this territory, combining my skills with something more tangible, more manual. That’s when an old passion resurfaced: sewing. In the heat of mid-August 2022, I stitched the first prototypes of the “Kit Emilie.” People loved them. A lot. Over the following months, I refined the idea, and in October, CuCilento was born — a name that in dialect means “with Cilento.” A project that blends the desire to live creatively every day with the will to make my part for the environment. To me, upcycling means giving value: restoring dignity to what was considered waste, transforming it into something new, useful, and beautiful. Two years ago, I could never have imagined all of this. And who knows what’s still left to stitch, discover, and share.
In the meantime, I thank life — and the people who walk this path with me — for making CuCilento possible. This project was born from a simple gesture, but it moves forward every day thanks to those who choose it with awareness.
Like a little hummingbird carrying water to put out a fire, I contribute with small gestures to a greater change!
CuCilento is a sustainable, tailor-made project where discarded materials are brought back to life, and every piece tells a story of care and transformation. I promote a circular economy by creating job opportunities for local women, valuing time, craftsmanship, and human connections.
A Tribute to Circular Economy
Tailored upcycling, with a heart rooted in Cilento.
In the heart of Cilento, where nature still whispers and hands know how to create, CuCilento is born: a tailoring upcycling workshop that gives new life to what once seemed lost. We transform discarded materials — like olive harvesting nets, decommissioned sails, and forgotten fabrics — into unique objects, designed to accompany daily life with lightness, functionality, and beauty. Each creation is the result of a slow and conscious gesture. A small tribute to simplicity, to material, to respect for the environment. CuCilento embraces the principles of circular economy: valuing secondary raw materials (SRMs), reducing waste, and generating new possibilities from what already exists. Every product is born from a careful process — selection, cleaning, transformation — where creativity meets sustainability and each piece becomes a story of recovery, identity, and future.
Our Social Commitment
A Widespread Workshop, A Commitment That Weaves Connections
For CuCilento, sustainability is not just about the environment — it's also social, relational, and woven into everyday life.
We chose to build a widespread workshop, entrusting the production to local seamstresses who work from home, with their own time, their own space, their own stories.
A model that balances family life and artisanal work, values local skills, and restores dignity to a craft made of ancient gestures and contemporary care.
We produce in Cilento, because this is where the project was born, and because the land nourishes us every day with inspiration, raw materials, and respect.
Our workshops are quiet yet vibrant places, where each item takes shape through a careful process: recovery, selection, cleaning, transformation.
Every CuCilento product is sewn by real hands, in real time. It’s a small act of circular economy, but also a powerful gesture of community. Choosing CuCilento means bringing home not just an item, but a piece of territory, a vision of the future, a value to wear.
